Abstract—Based on examination of the collection of stemmed echinoderm holdfasts from the Ordovician of the Leningrad Region (Russia), all holdfasts are divided in two large groups: “unbranched” and “branched”. In total, 11 morphotypes of unbranched holdfasts are identified and described in detail.
Benthic communities depend on receiving much of their food from the water column. While sinking, particles are transformed in a discontinuous process and are temporally retained in transitional physical structures, which act as boundaries and contribute to their further transformation. Motile organisms are well-acquainted with boundaries. The numbe...
One dominant ecological trait in the dimly-lit deep-sea is the ability of organisms to emit bioluminescence. Despite its many ecological roles in deep-sea ecosystems, the presence of inherent bioluminescence in marine sponges has been debated for more than a century. This work reports repeated observations of luminescence from six individuals of an...

AbstractA brief review of the recent state of research on the dynamics of sea-bottom communities is given together with a revision of the basic concepts and models. It precedes a special issue of the Journal devoted to the results of particular studies on benthic communities on different spatial and temporal scales.

The flow of carbon from atmosphere to sediment fauna and sediments reduces atmospheric CO2, which in turn reduces warming. Here, during the Changing Arctic Ocean Seafloor programme, we use comparable methods to those used in the Antarctic (vertical, calibrated camera drops and trawl-collected specimens) to calculate the standing stock of zoobenthic...

An increase in richness of benthic marine mollusks towards high latitudes has been described on the Pacific coast of Chile in recent decades. This considerable increase in diversity occurs specifically at the beginning of the Magellanic Biogeographic Province. Within this province lies the Strait of Magellan, considered the most important channel b...

AbstractThe species composition and structure of bottom communities with a predominance of bivalve mollusks of the Portlandia genus, which are widespread on the shelf of the Russian Arctic, were analyzed. Molecular genetic analysis confirmed that Portlandia aestuariorum and P. arctica are valid species; it has been shown that all P. arctica from di...

We analysed the occurrence of ostracods in a small river, taking into account all the types of water bodies in the floodplain − these included helocrenes, oxbow lakes, and ponds, as well as the main river channel. The objective of the study was to investigate the variation in ostracod communities and identify those factors determining species distr...
This paper presents integrated research on ecosystems of small lakes experiencing the direct impact of a copper-nickel ore processing plant, the &ldquo / Kolskaya GMK&rdquo / (MS KGMK), near the town of Monchegorsk Kola Peninsula, Russia. An integrated research method with the analysis of both abiotic and biotic components of aquatic ecosystems was...
