Infection with Schistosoma mansoni causes intestinal schistosomiasis, a major health problem across Africa. The accurate diagnosis of intestinal schistosomiasis is vital to inform surveillance/control programs. Diagnosis mainly relies on microscopic detection of eggs in faecal samples but many factors affect sensitivity. Molecular diagnostics are s...

The Burkholderia cepacia complex (BCC) can cause a severe decline in lung function in cystic fibrosis (CF). Our objective was to determine the BCC prevalence and to evaluate its clinical impact on CF. Clinical and laboratory variables were determined for CF patients with BCC (Group-A = 50 patients) and without BCC (Group-B = 134 patients). The micr...

This study showed that the FilmArray BioThreat-E test performs comparably to conventional molecular tests under field conditions, providing results and interpretation in approximately 1h. Due to its operational characteristics, it can be easily deployed in the field during an epidemic and could also be a useful tool for post-outbreak surveillance.

Candida sp. have been responsible for an increasing number of infections, especially in patients with immunodeficiency. Species-specific differentiation of Candida sp. is difficult in routine diagnosis. This identification can have a highly significant association in therapy and prophylaxis. This work has shown a new application of the terminal res...

IntroductionThis study aimed to demonstrate the clinical utility of non-invasive multigene Cxbladder urine tests in reducing the overall number of diagnostic tests and invasive procedures used in the clinical evaluation of patients presenting with microhematuria, a key symptom of urothelial carcinoma (UC). There is a belief that using non-invasive ...

Zika virus (ZIKV) infection is an emerging global health concern, and diagnostic recommendations are currently developing based on new information. Several case or small sample size studies using both urine and blood samples suggest that ZIKV RNA can be detected at higher levels and for a longer time after onset of infection in urine compared to bl...

Airborne precautions are required at hospital admission for patients with suspected pulmonary tuberculosis. The isolation is maintained until 3 serially collected sputum smears are acid-fast bacilli negative, a time- and labor-intensive method with limited sensitivity and specificity, which has a great impact on patient flow management. We evaluate...

The properties of gold nanomaterials are particularly of interest to many researchers, since they show unique physiochemical properties such as optical adsorption of specific wavelength of light, high electrical conductance with rich surface electrons, and facile surface modification with sulfhydryl groups. These properties have facilitated the use...

BackgroundThe current standard practice of lung lesion diagnosis often leads to inconclusive results, requiring additional diagnostic follow up procedures that are invasive and often unnecessary due to the high benign rate in such lesions (Chest 143:e78S-e92, 2013). The Percepta bronchial genomic classifier was developed and clinically validated to...
