Corneal thickness and corneal curvature were measured before and after the wearing of hydrophilic contact lenses and it was consistently found that the thickness increased while the curvature virtually remained unaltered. On removal of the lenses the cornea returned to its normal thickness within two hours.
Rat sympathetic neurons, plated onto extracellular matrix produced by cultured bovine corneal endothelial cells, rapidly extended neurites in the absence of nerve growth factor (NGF). The response was unaffected by antiserum to NGF. Rapid outgrowth also occurred when sympathetic neurons were plated onto polylysine-coated surfaces that had been expo...
Following topical application of (125)IVDU, the radiolabeled analogue of bromovinyldeoxyuridine ([E]-5-[2-bromovinyl]-2'-deoxyuridine), as 0.5% or 0.3% eyedrops, to rabbits, (125I)IVDU appeared in the anterior chamber fluid at drug levels well above the minimum concentration (0.01 microgram/mL) required for inhibition of herpes simplex virus type 1...
When culture medium, conditioned by any of several cell types, is applied to a polycationic substratum, a substance is adsorbed that causes neurons cultured on that substratum to extend processes (neurites) rapidly and profusely. We have purified the factor responsible for this effect from medium conditioned by bovine corneal endothelial cells, and...
An increase in aqueous K + from 0 to 4 mM increased the potential difference (anomalous response of electrogenic (Na + + K +)-ATPase antiport) by 1.1 mV in Cl −-free solutions compared to 6.8 mV in Cl − solutions. With amphotericin B added to the tear solution in Cl −-free solutions, the anomalous PD response for the addition of 4 mM K + to the aqu...
Previous research into the aetiology of contact lens-related infection has focussed upon a) the ability of bacteria such as P. aeruginosa to adhere to contact lenses, b) the role of lens contamination, and c) patient compliance factors. However, these studies have not fully explained the increased susceptibility to P. aeruginosa infection during le...
