Abstract

•We tested nest-building zebra finches in a building task.•Birds had to choose an appropriate length of nest material.•Birds selected the correct length of nest material to take into a nestbox.•Birds also changed how they held material with experience.•With these changes in handling, the birds also became more successful builders.
