Abstract

There's a new role emerging for today's medical practice administrator: member of the organization's clinical team. Although the tasks of an administrator still stop at the doorway of the exam or operating room, what he or she does everywhere else in the practice is increasingly recognized as a direct aid to clinical quality. Nonclinicians can--and should--try to influence the patient care process. In addition to understanding their roles in risk management and patient safety, administrators should help ensure a courteous, competent and compassionate administrative staff.
