Abstract

•We developed XMRV-derived vectors to study its fitness in human cells.•XMRV exhibits a weak promoter activity in human cells.•XMRV can efficiently propagate through the accumulation of viral copies.•Promoter activity makes a link between DNA accumulation and envelope interference.•Retroviral promoter is thus part of this virus-host cell adaptation determinant.
