Abstract

As far as history of sports is concerned, Dr. Willibald Gebhardt is well known as an energetic and excentric chemicist who founded and lead the first ever German Olympic Team to the games at Athens, in despite of the declared will of both Prussian government and sports functionaires. The non-physician Gebhardt achieved distinct progress in photomedicine und hygiene which was holded back or doubted by the experts during his lifetime. Gebhardt's book "Die Heilkraft des Lichtes" printed in 1898 represents a milestone of photomedicine as well as a goldmine in view of future photomedical developments.
