Abstract

In this article, the authors do not examine urban renewal per se. Instead, they focus on thelink between ethics and democracy. Because democracy presupposes ethics for its own legitimacy, a good government must comply with ethical standards. Given thatordinances, which contain such standards, already exist in Northwest Indiana, one  concrete step toward the creation of a sustainable future in that same region has been  taken, providing officials with a vehicle for democratic cum ethical urban renewal. In an  attempt to identify the kind of ethics that went into the ordinances, the authors emphasize  general theory.
