Abstract

Premature flowering can occur in some varieties of Bouvardia. This means that a number of stems of the crop will form flowers during the long day period en flower some weeks before the rest. It is not clear whether Bouvardia is a facultative or obligate short day plant; this could vary between varieties. Premature flowering can occur while using different lamp types. Premature flowering proved not to be a habit of single plants. Plants with premature flowering in one harvest could not show this in the following harvest and the other way round. The number of shoots and their position on the plant did not correlate with premature flowering. All this should make it possible to prevent premature flowering by growth circumstances.
