Abstract

•We compared fitness in territorial and nonterritorial male collared lizards.•Behaviour of males using these two tactics was markedly different, fitness was not.•We estimated sexual selection on male behaviour and morphology.•None of the traits that we examined were under selection when we pooled all males.•Snout–vent length was under positive directional selection for territorial males.
