Abstract

Over the past 25 years there was a marked increase in the sulfate concentration in many water supply wells in Germany. It was due to complex relationships between various sulfur sources, immission pathways and processes in soils. At some locations management and technological measures had to be taken to meet the drinking water limit of 240 mg SO_4/L in force until the end of 2001. To investigate causes and solutions of water quality problems brought about by high sulfate concentrations in groundwater in areas under agricultural land use or forestry, the 'Bundesministerium fuer Bildung und Forschung (BMBF)' funded an interdisciplinary research project. The dissertation presented here is based on work carried out as part of this project by the UFZ -Umweltforschungszentrum Leipzig-Halle GmbH, Sektion Bodenforschung, Lysimeterstation Falkenberg. The main goals of the dissertation were to: -identify the sources of sulfate leached from soils into groundwater - assess sulfate retardation in soils - quantify the sulfate balance - evaluate strategies to reduce sulfate leaching - investigate the effect of sulfur fertilization on sulfate leaching.
