Abstract

This article covers studies of both the beneficial and the adverse effects of adding phosphoric acid to lead–acid batteries. The chemical mechanisms of these effects on the electrochemistry of the positive electrode are discussed. A thermodynamic model predicts the chemical lead oxides, sulfates, and phosphates that form on the positive electrode of a lead–acid battery when small quantities of phosphoric acid are added to the battery electrolyte.
