Abstract

•The evolution of the expected mean collision rate in LEO, among objects larger than 10cm, is estimated from 1980 to 2040.•The current collision rate is computed by exploiting the LEO spatial density of unclassified cataloged objects.•Information on the past on-orbit accidental collisions among cataloged objects is presented.•The concept of catastrophic collision is re-analyzed, and its possible impact on long-term debris modeling is discussed.
