Abstract
•The relevance of play to behavioural development was examined in primates.•Primates that play more have greater amounts of postnatal brain growth.•Nonsocial play is associated with a greater frequency of tool use.•Social play is associated with a higher frequency of tactical deception.•Play may therefore play an adaptive role in behavioural development.
