Abstract

It is shown that the data on charged particle multiplicity distributions for e + e − annihilations are well consistent in a broad center-of-mass energy range with a pure birth process characterized by the so-called modified negative binomial distribution, with an integer number of initial sources, N , at each energy. For 2⩽ GeV, the shape of the charged particle multiplicity distribution is practically completely determined by the mean multiplicity. Possible interpretations of the parameter N are discussed.
