Abstract

Five years after the Yellow Vest crisis, France is once again the scene of a series of demonstrations. The protest movement subject to this study arises after the introduction of the new pension reform of the President Emmanuel Macron. It stands out from previous forms of mobilization, not only for the regular organization of demonstrations that bring together hundreds of people of all ages and social status, but also for the echo that movement gained also abroad. Using Network Analysisin an exploratory study, the hashtag #reformedesretraites was analysed. Following observation of the results led to the identification of a new hashtag, #bemorefrench, mainly used by English speakers. The analysis outcomes suggest that the latter can be interpreted not only as a gesture of international solidarity in favour of the French social movement, but also as an expression of a mobilization resulting from widely generalized dissatisfaction and discontent. This initiative seeks to answer how social networks have the capability to mobilize and empower common groups and can increasingly influence public debate on global scale by studying how the new protestmovement has proliferated through online media spaces and how much this form of online activism found echo in foreign contexts
