•We examined the evaluative and behavioural effects of environmental goal priming.•Environmental goal-relevant stimuli were loose versus packaged products.•Environmental goal priming influenced automatic evaluation.•Environmental goal priming increased choices of loose products.•Automatic evaluation change mediated the observed behaviour change.
