The use of total cardiopulmonary bypass is predictive of perioperative myocardial ischemia in surgery for thoracic aortic aneurysms, probably due to the production of proinflammatory cytokines by systemic ischemia and reperfusion. Prophylactic use of coronary vasodilators may be validated in these cases.
