Abstract
Highlights ► Winter site fidelity of Eurasian spoonbills strongly increases with age. ► Spoonbills are highly faithful to their wintering area after the first year of life. ► Adult spoonbills winter further away from the breeding grounds than juveniles. ► Unexpectedly, most spoonbills winter in the area where survival is lowest. ► Potential explanations for this unexpected result are discussed.
