For the purpose of studying the laminar-turbulent transition in the flat plate boundary layer at a freestream Mach number M_#infinity#=0.8 a numerical scheme for the direct simulation of the flow, as determined by the compressible, unsteady three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations, was developed. It is based on the spatially periodic model. The scheme was tested successfully by comparison of simulated data with the respective results from primary and secondary stability theory. Simulations of the fundamental as well as the subharmonic type of transition are presented. The changes of the transition behaviour due to different boundary conditions for the temperature are considered for the fundamental type. The transitioning flow field is examined for those structures that occur as a result of the compressibility, especially: Density, pressure and Mach number. The transitional development of iso-surfaces of the enstrophy is looked at. Low resolution simulations up to the early stages of turbulence were performed. The distribution of the aero-acoustic source terms caused by the transitional velocity fluctuations are considered also.
