Between 15th and 16th September, 2004, the Ostbayrische Technologie-Transfer-Institut e.V. (Regensburg, Federal Republic of Germany) performed a two-day workshop with the title ''New surfaces for plastics-pre-treatment and coating''. The topics of the lectures of the first day were: (a) Evaporation processes and sputter processes and their reactive variants for the production of thin films on plastics (Prof. Dr. H. K: Pulker, University of Innsbruck); (b) Production of ultraviolet resistant and wear-resistant polycarbonate films on the example of automobile window panes (Dipl.-Phys. W. Hedderich. Exatec GmbH and Co. KG); (c) Surface modification and PVD metallization of plastics (Dipl.-Ing. J. Friedrich, Neue Materialien Fuerth GmbH); (d) Fundamentals and applications of a galvanic coating of plastics (Dr.-Ing. A. Zielonka, Forschungsinstitut Edelmetalle and Metallchemie); (e) Coating of plastic components by means of lacquering (Dr. B. Bergk, Forschungsinstitut fuer Pigmente und Lacke e.V.); (f) Successive introduction of thermoplastics inline-lacquering at automobiles of the prime class - the front sidewall of BMW6er (Dr. J. Kopitzke, BMW AG); (g) New PVD process for the structured metallization of plastics (Dr. M. Thomas, Fraunhofer Institut fuer Schicht- und Oberflaechentechnik e.V.). The topics of the lectures of the second day were: (a) Modifying plastic surfaces by plasma polymerization (Dr. H. Gruenwald, Plasma Electronic GmbH); (b) Pre-treatment and coating of plastics for optical applications in industry (Dipl.-Phys. B. Heinz, EuropTec GmbH); (c) Optical large area coating of films by means of magnetron sputtering (Dr. J. Struempfel, VON ARDENNE Anlagentechnik GmbH); (d) Plasma treatment at atmospheric pressure (Dr. G. Ellinghorst, Fraunhofer Institut fuer Fertigungstechnik und Angewandte Materialforschung); (e) Barriers layers for flexible packages (Prof. Dr. H.-Chr. Langowski, Fraunhofer Institut fuer Verfahrenstechnik und Verpackung); (f) Twocomponental polyurethanes for the plastic coating (Dr. J.
