Abstract

In cooperation with the Environmental Policy Research Department of Freie Universitaet Berlin University, the FEderal Minister of the Environment invited politicians and decision-makers of the power industry, environmental associations and trade unions to discuss the future of power supply after the nuclear phase-out. Nuclear phase-out will be a precondition and an incentive for a revolution in technological efficiency and will advance new energy sources and air pollution abatement. Apart from the development of renewable energy sources, there is also the aspect of making energy conversion systems more efficient. It is envisaged that by 2012, emissions of climate-relevant gases will be reduced by 21 percent as referred to 1990, and the energy intensity will be reduced by half, while the share of renewable energy sources will be doubled by 2010.
