Abstract

Except in the long <I>Pythian</i> 4, generally regarded as an exception, Pindar in the <I>Epinicians</i> virtually reserves direct speech for a special function: to enhance the drama, to bring out the fundamental significance of communication between mortals and the divine world (and, although less often, between gods).
