Abstract

We fit the multiplicity distribution for negative particles produced in pp collisions at high energy. The model contains a multiperipheral component together with a pomeron exchange component, which is calculated with the assumption that the multiplicity distribution in pomeron-proton collisions is the same as that in proton-proton collisions. In order to obtain the required low multiplicity for the pomeron component it is necessary to assume that the pomeron-proton crosssection falls off very rapidly with energy.
