Abstract

This report combines two different threads of research: In the first chapter, we make a proposal for a mathematical model of prejudiced behaviour. The heuristic background of this is the study of agents in open marketplaces, e.g., on the internet. We derive our model from a simple outset within the framework of the general theory of learning systems and a few axiomatic assumptions. The model considered turns out to be an example of a noisy dynamical system. Systems of this type have recently attracted much attention in the physical and mathematical communities. We perform a theoretical study of our special system in chapter 2 and carry out some numerical experiments. We stress the analogy of the phenomenology of the system with phase transitions in physical systems. The results that we obtain in chapter 2 give us some insight into the qualitative behaviour that learning systems governed by our prejudiced learning rule will exhibit.
