Abstract
Due to the ever-rising innovation pressure placed on incumbent companies in the plant and mechanical engineering sector, R&D is increasingly faced with the enormous challenge of establishing organizational architectures that allow incremental and radical innovations to be developed at the same time. This work is based on the scientific approach of ambidexterity, which describes the ability to develop both incremental and radical innovations, even though they require a contradictory organizational design. The aim of this dissertation is to develop a design method (the AMOLD-Method = AMbidextrous OrganizationaL Design Method) for creating a suitable organizational concept for radical technology development within the R&D sector based on the principle of ambidexterity. This aim resulted in the following sub-goals: The AMOLD-Method should enable a suitable organizational design based on ambidexterity to be dynamically planned for a radical technological development - from its initiation to its transfer to corporate business - according to its degree of maturity. The AMOLD-Method should provide consistent methodical support to identify potential for improvement, recommend a systematic selection of suitable design options and enable specific evaluation depending on the company situation. Based on an ambidextrous design model, the AMOLD-Method was developed to supply specific strategic and operative recommendations aligned with ambidextrous design. To achieve this, findings from research on ambidexterity and technology & innovation management were combined with each other. Finally, the design model should consider dependencies specific to ambidexterity. The multidimensional model was created with the purpose of serving as a reference for optimal design, identifying relations among the interdependencies and supplying recommendations to implement differentiation and integration design possibilities between technology development and corporate business.
