This thesis describes the conception and prototypical implementation of a routing application for a 3d geo information system. The requirements for an effective usability and realisation of such an application are deduced from basic principles of human orientation and navigation in reality as well as in virtual environments as discussed in recent literature. Additionally, recent papers about adaptive visualisation systems in 3d cartography are analyzed. Afterwards a conceptual design is derived from a scenario-based approach. The essential part of the concept is the server-side generation of context-aware route visualisation instructions on the basis of user pro- files. This is achieved by integration of semantic information and landmarks. The conceptualized adaptation system is able to generate a mediaindependent camera movement. By this means, it is possible to highlight objects along the route that are relevant and interesting for the user to achieve a better memorability. A prototypic, easy-to-use client application realises the animation of these adapted route visualisation instructions. Additionally the client enhances the memorability of route directions by offering simple interactions with the visualisation. In a final step, the developed concept is evaluated qualitatively in a usability test of the prototype.
