Abstract

•We investigated the existence of maternal styles in Japanese quail.•We analysed the relations between these styles and temperaments of mothers and chicks.•We demonstrated for first time the existence of maternal styles in a bird species.•Maternal styles can be predicted by females' temperaments.•Maternal styles affect chicks' behavioural development.
