Abstract

New experimental laser techniques have been applied for basic research on molecular clusters (benzene-argon, benzene-benzene, benzene-copper, silver-silver, niobium-niobium) in the gas phase. Informations on cluster sizes, state of energy, interactions and kinetics at defined cluster size were obtained using mass-selective hole-burning spectroscopy, ion stop method for cluster selection and mass-resolved zero electron kinetic energy (ZEKE) spectroscopy. Structural isomers of the benzene dimer could be identified by selective hole-burning spectroscopy. In molecular ethylbenzene-metal clusters (metal = Ni, Pt, Pd,Cu, Co, Ag, Zn, Al) dehydrogenation occurred only with Ni and Pt. Results of ab initio calculations on the structure and stabilization of benzene-argon and benzene-benzene dimers are in good agreement with spectroscopic data.
