The aim of this study has been to examine how learning was situated at a study centre in an upper secondary school and how the learning environment was perceived by those who were using it. My frame of references has been based on a socio cultural approach on learning, and my method was to observe the students for some days at the study centre. I also wanted to interview some of the students who were using the study centre almost every day. In my research I have been inspired by Grounded Theory. In my results I found four central conceptions: Teacher’s instructions affected the students’ results of learning, students’ independence and individual search for knowledge were of importance for their own results, information literacy affected the students´ results of learning and the environment in the study centre affected the students’ results of learning. The tethers instructions often included individual work that students’ worked with while they were sitting together in more social forms then in the classroom. The way of searching information was of importance for their learning process, where information literacy and using digital tools often were involved. The whole environment in the study centre and the way learning was allowed at the study centre, affected the students learning in a positive way. In my analysis of learning from a socio cultural perspective I also found that it is of importance that teachers and staff at the study centre should be more eager to work with each other in order to give the students the best possibilities for their learning. / Validerat; 20110608 (anonymous)
