Internal turbulence of the injector flow and the liquid free jet is identified as the mechanism that induces primary disturbances at the liquid jet surface emerging from the coaxial injector in high pressure H_2/O_2 rocket engines. Large-Eddy-Simulation of the turbulent flow field is applied for various cases of the injector flow. Based on the injector flow, turbulence evolution inside the emerging free jet is simulated by computing the relaxation of turbulence between pseudo walls assuming slip conditions. Presentation of momentary as well as time averaged results gives a physical insight in the spatial and temporal processes of turbulence for several fluids under various boundary conditions. Correlations were found between experimentally observed surface perturbations at the liquid jet surface directly after injector exit and computed length as well as velocity scales of coherent turbulent structures in the liquid core flow inside the injector.
