Abstract

•TRLFS of Eu(III)–C4DGA complexes in IL were studied.•5D0→7F2 transitions suggest that Eu3+ sits in a highly asymmetric environment.•1:1 Complexes were formed with no inner sphere water molecule around Eu3+.•The splitting pattern of Eu3+ transitions indicated C4V local site symmetry.•Judd and Ofelt parameters indicated decrease in the covalent interactions.
