Abstract

Specific light rotation (α) by solutions of propylene oxide and polypropylene oxide shows a complex dependence on medium properties. For propylene oxide, α values depend on medium basicity and polarizability, which increase α, and the ability to electrophilic solvation, which decreases α. With polypropylene oxide, α values are only determined by solvent polarizability.
