The importance of clay and clay materials for the radioactive waste disposal / Die Bedeutung von Tongestein und Tonmaterialien fuer die Endlagerung radioaktiver Abfaelle

Der vorliegende Bericht wurde im Rahmen des Vorhabens SR 2337 ''Untersuchungen zur Sicherheit von Endlagern fuer radioaktive Abfaelle nach ihrem Verschluss'' erstellt. Die Zielsetzung der Arbeit war die Zusammenstellung und Darstellung von Informationen hinsichtlich Tongestein und Tonmaterialien als Endlagermedium fuer radioaktive Abfaelle zur Schaffung einer Orientierungs- und Wissensgrundlage als Ausgangsbasis fuer weiterfuehrende Arbeiten. Der Inhalt des Berichtes umfasst einen allgemeinen einfuehrenden Teil, internationale Betrachtungen zur Eignungsfaehigkeit von Ton als Endlagerformation sowie als Medium fuer geotechnische Barrieren und Forschungs- und Entwicklungsarbeiten (F+E) mit deutscher Beteiligung. Die auf internationaler Ebene durchgefuehrten F+E-Arbeiten hinsichtlich des Mediums Ton bilden ein breites Untersuchungsspektrum, das in vielen Bereichen zu einer signifikanten Wissens-und Verstaendnissteigerung gefuehrt hat. Einige Aspekte wie beispielsweise das Auflockerungsverhalten von Tonformationen und der Gaseinfluss sind jedoch bisher nur wenig bzw. noch nicht ausreichend erforscht und beduerfen in der Zukunft einer eingehenden Untersuchung. (orig.) / This available report was created in the context of the SR 2337 project ''Investigations of the Safety of Radioactive Waste Repositories after Closure''. The objective of the work was to compile and present information about clay and clay materials as the medium for radioactive waste disposal to form a basis of knowledge for future work. The content of the report covers a general introductory section, international views about the suitability of clay as a host rock for radioactive waste disposal and as well as medium for geo-technical barriers and the specification of research and development (R and D) with German participation. The R and D carried out on an international level with regard to the clay medium forms a broad investigative spectrum which has led to a significant increase in knowledge and understanding in many areas. Some aspects, for example the behaviour of clay formations in the excavation disturbed zone and the effects of gas, have so far only been very little or insufficiently researched and need to be investigated more in detail.
