Abstract

I propose to show the manipulative nature of the 'Leave' camp's leaflets during the campaign that led to Britain's exit from the European Union in 2016. The approach is pragmatic and linguistic, but also multimodal. It aims to uncover how the cognitive manipulation of readers is carried out in these flyers by playing on the implicit in various ways. The strategies of influence at work will be analyzed in an attempt to understand what may have led a majority of Britons to break with the EU.
