Abstract

Housing, industry, and transport are equally responsible for CO2 emissions into the atmosphere on a global scale. In the home, air conditioning is a major source of these emissions. This dissertation looks at the innovation that this technology represented in the early 1930s. Using texts, advertisements and analyses of houses built at the time, the aim is to show how this technology brought about a breakthrough in architecture, radically transforming the home and homogenising spaces by abolishing climatic constraints. However, critics were quick to point out the trivialisation of forms and the lack of attention paid to territories. / AR2A011 / Architectural History Thesis / Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences
