Abstract

•FORMOSAT-2 (FS2) is still the unique satellite to observe the transient luminous events (TLEs) from orbit.•The number and distribution of TLEs observed from 4 July 2004 to 31 May 2013 are summarized.•Due to the orbital characteristics of FORMOSAT-2, unobserved gaps and time exist.•Globalization extension estimated a rate of 24 TLEs per minute, much less than the potential rate of 195.•To enhance the results, more instruments and longer observation time are required.
