Abstract

The current printable materials are mainly limited to Fe, Ti, Co, and Ni-based alloys because they have good laser absorptivity. However, a number of Al alloys that are highly reflective to a laser are incompatible with selective laser melting. We demonstrate here that the coating with a small amount of high laser-absorbing Ni on Al powder reduces laser reflectivity, improves its printability, and increases tensile strength to similar to 1.5 times that of printed pure Al.
