Abstract

AbstractThe process of frost heaving during seasonal freezing and other affecting factors on the projected Moscow-Kazan railway are considered. Despite the fact that the region has been extensively developed, the heave properties, especially under modern climate conditions, have not been examined sufficiently. The results of fields studies of the frost heave properties of soils on the monitoring sites located in the typical natural complexes along the projected Moscow–Kazan railway line are presented; they include the physical properties of soils, the depth of seasonal freezing, the thermal regime of soils, the groundwater regime, and the thickness of the snow cover, as well as the basic characteristics of frost heaves.
