Abstract

It is investigated, how Al_2O_3-matrix composite materials can be formed through an oxidation process of an Al-alloy melt, and properties of the prepared specimens are being described. Within appropriate temperature and alloy composition ranges the reaction product (#alpha#-Al_2O_3) grows outward from the original Al-alloy melt surface either into free space or into a filler. In this work the effect of Si, Zn and Mg as alloy dopants on this process without filler and the effect of size and type of filler on growth rate are investigated. The properties of eleven different composite materials made by the directed oxidation of Al-alloy are reported.
