Abstract

During a short, but richly productive, academic career, Franz Nikolaus Finck (1867–1910) studied and published on a broad spectrum of languages including Irish Gaelic, Armenian, and Romani, as well as Caucasian, Polynesian, and Bantu idioms. He advocated field work on unwritten languages in addition to the traditional philological approach to linguistic scholarship. He was an early influence on the study of language typology, and as his thought developed, he published several works dealing with aspects of this area.
