Abstract

Through the study of three epistemological fictions from the early modern period (Kepler, Cyrano, Fontenelle) this work offers a cognitivist and pragmatist theory of fiction and of its effects on our beliefs and vision of the world. The analysis of the manner in which scientific knowledge is re-interpreted in these texts reveals a blurring process, differentiating them from traditional thought experiments. In response, this thesis tries to provide a new analytical vocabulary (redescription, recontextualization, exemplification) to describe their influence on inferential processes during the act of reading, and their action through style and specific apparatus. This renders a theory of fiction that emphasizes the uses or gestures some fictions display as affordances, and the formative and empowering consequences they have on our cognitive dispositions and abilities. / ST QUENTIN EN YVELINES-BU (782972101) / Sudoc / Sudoc / France / FR
