Jain Temple Complex

Abstract

Dedicated to Shantinatha, this is the largest of a group of Jain structures located a short distance from the 5th c. Dashavatara Vishnu Temple at Deogarh (Devgadh). The earliest portions of this west-facing temple largely consists of the sanctum (garbhagriha) and the tower (sikara), although the upper portion of the tower is heavily restored. Later additions include the open pillared hall (mandapa). The outer ambulatory wall surrounding the sanctum contains numerous sculptural fragments (largely nude, variously dated) cemented into place.
