Abstract

Abstract The respiratory chain of Micrococcus lysodeikticus membranes can be disrupted by detergents into two blocks, one of which contains malate and NADH dehydrogenases with cytochrome b 556 and the other cytochromes b 560, c 550 and a 601. These blocks maintain their functional activity, exhibiting various degrees of bonding within the membrane. Hydrophobic interactions being weakened, the substrate portion of the chain is solubilized more readily than the terminal one.
