Abstract

Abstract The identification of polymers by pyrolysis—gas chromatography using individual pyrolysis products that characterize the composition and structure of macromolecules of the polymers under investigation is discussed. For identification a detailed chromatographic separation of pyrolysis products with a wide range of molecular weights is performed, using temperature programming, stationary phases of different polarity and multi-column systems, and then the relationship between the individual pyrolysis products separated and the sample structure is established. Thereafter, based on this correlation and on a pyrogram of a sample of unknown nature, the identification is carried out. Examples of the identification of synthetic polymers and their compounds, polymer additives and polymer traces, similar in their nature to polymers, such as nitrile rubbers and various butyl rubbers and polyisobutylene, are given.
