Abstract

Abstract We present a justification of the matrix diagonalization method for the systems described by effective-mass Hamiltonian, which contains electrostatic image potential diverging at the abrupt interface. We show that in spite of the divergence of the individual integrals in the expression of the Hamiltonian matrix element, the value of the matrix element should be finite. To obtain the finite quantity we use the concept of a principle value calculation.
