Abstract

Abstract A number of results are presented from the application of a Laguerre function expansion method to the study of temperature and thermoelastic stress resulting from local symmetric surface heat transfer coefficient transients on the surface of a heat generating body, relevant to problems of boiling in water cooled reactors. Details are also given of the approximate solution of the parabolic heat conduction equations and the calculation of the maximum thermoelastic stress in these problems, by a finite difference approach, using an alternating direction explicit process and a local one-dimensional method.
