Optical study of the excited state of theV′centre in MgO

Abstract

Abstract The optical bleaching of the V′ centre in MgO (the charge antimorph of the F centre) has been examined using optical absorption at temperatures between 300 and 80°K. A model is developed which gives good agreement with the observed features of the bleaching kinetics. We find that the V′ centre has a bound excited state 17 ± 2 meV above the valence band edge, with a radiative lifetime of 11 ± 7 · 10 −7 sec. The results are discussed in terms of a comparison between the V′ centre and the alkali halide F centres.
