Destruction of the superconductivity in (Bi1−xPbx) SrCaCuO ceramics due to the reaction with water

Abstract

Abstract Changes of magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity of ceramic superconductors of nominal composition Bi 1.4Pb 0.6Sr 2Ca 2Cu 3.6O x observed during their soaking in boiling water are reported. Reaction with water is shown to cause a decrease of the relative volume of both superconducting phases at a rate substantially higher for the high-temperature one (T c≊ 110 K). The reaction with water seems to result in a formation of a new semiconducting phase in the sample.
