Abstract

Abstract A kinetic study of the reactions of Fe(CO) 4X 2 (X Br, I) with Y(YCO, P(C 6H 5) 3, As(C 6H 5) 3, Sb(C 6H 5) 3, P(OC 6H 5) 3 to yield the monosubstituted products FeY(CO) 3X 2 and disubstituted products FeY 2(CO) 2X 2 is reported. The rate of formation of FeY(CO) 3X 2 does not depend on the concentration of Y, but the reaction is light catalysed and is inhibited by adding X 2. It is suggested that the mechanism for this reaction involves the initial formation of Fe(CO) 4, followed by its reaction with Y and then with YX 2 to generate the product FeY(CO) 3X 2. This then reacts more slowly with Y to yield FeY 2(CO) 2X 2 by a dissociation process.
